Entrance wooden doors for a private house

Wooden Entrance Doors have always been and will be popular with owners of inexpensive country houses using frame technology and wooden houses made of logs or beams. What is the popularity of wooden entrance doors and why they still have not been completely replaced by steel and metal doors in country houses, because they are considered more durable and reliable?

Firstly, when it comes to choosing an entrance door to a country house, for a cottage or a wooden bath, then wooden doors will certainly beat the steel doors in appearance, in style and design, they fit perfectly into the exterior and interior of a wooden house, because made of the same material and even if you want, have the same energy as a living tree.

Secondly, wooden entrance doors nevertheless, steel doors are significantly superior in terms of heat and sound insulation. Everyone knows that wood has much lower thermal conductivity than metal and significantly less sound. Therefore, wooden entrance doors are significantly better in these parameters than metal and steel. Of course, it can be argued that today the market offers steel doors with high thermal insulation and wood-grain-finish finishes. All this is true, but at the same time, the price of such doors is much higher than the price of wooden entrance doors, and the parameters still often do not reach the wooden ones.

What wooden entrance doors does the market offer today?

Of course, these are the cheapest paneled doors or composite doors made of solid pine. Such doors have a minimum cost from 2000 to 6000 - 8000 rubles, but as a rule they are not intended for use as entrance doors. In addition, often paneled doors offer to buy what is called “bare” without hinges and locks. To install such a door, you need to have real carpentry skills, be able to embed hardware, which you must agree, not everyone can do it, even if they have the right tool. Despite all the positive properties of wood, panel doors made of solid pine are intended for indoor use, and as entrance doors, they will freeze and crack, which will ultimately lead to door breakage, large heat losses in the house and lack of comfort.

Entrance wooden doors of the middle class and elite from solid pine or precious wood, most often from oak. Such doors are custom-made at joinery, they also mainly have a paneled construction, often with additional insulation of a small thickness (10-20mm) inside the panels. Doors can also be made with full or partial glazing using a double-glazed window. When ordering such a door, the buyer can fully show his imagination, because this front door is made to order. Such doors have quite acceptable thermal characteristics, although not outstanding, but the high characteristics of hardwood, the use of gaskets and an elegant appearance make many close their eyes to this drawback. Therefore, they are often installed in rooms with a thermal vestibule. Of course, entrance doors from an array made to order are not cheap, their cost starts from 40 thousand rubles and is limited only by the thickness of your wallet.

Insulated wooden entrance doors - such doors are suitable for use as the main entrance doors to the house or bathhouse. The basis of such a door is a wooden frame with efficient insulation inside. As decoration, lining of various profiles is used. The thickness of such an entrance door is much larger than a panel one, from 60 to 100 mm, so they have good heat and sound insulation performance and will exceed, in this regard, even with street entrance doors of a higher price category.

Wooden entrance doors made using this technology are especially popular in the Scandinavian countries. The price of such doors is a little more than the paneled interior doors made of solid pine, but according to their characteristics, these are full-fledged street doors. Of course, doors made of wood will respond to changes in temperature and humidity and change their geometric dimensions. Therefore, to compensate for these phenomena, insulated wooden doors use adjustable fittings and a sufficiently thick rubber seal. The low price of such doors and the appearance in the Scandinavian style makes them ideal inexpensive entrance doors for giving or bathing, built of natural material - logs or beams, as well as frame technology.

For lovers of Scandinavian traditions and true quality, they are suitable Finnish entrance doorsalso made of wood, but using modern technology. Today you can find such doors in almost every house in Finland, Sweden, Norway and other northern European countries. Modern materials (laminated laminated veneer lumber, high-density wood-fiber board, polystyrene foam or polyurethane foam as insulation) make the impact of external factors on the wooden door minimal. Traditionally, Finnish doors are equipped with Abloy locks, which have an original design that prevents freezing. In Finland, such doors are produced by many firms Fenestra, Jeld-Wen, Edux, Kaski, etc. Today, a set of such doors with fittings can be purchased at a price starting from 25 thousand rubles. for the economy class model, and up to 100 thousand rubles and higher for custom-made items.

Materials

When choosing the materials from which a wooden entrance door should be made, for most buyers, the balance of price and quality is decisive. Manufacturers offer a wide selection of raw materials, which can be dealt with by studying the properties and characteristics of various price categories of wood.

Array

The most preferred option for the manufacture of entrance doors is an array, that is, a natural wood board or timber. Divide an array of conifers and hardwoods. Each of these categories has its own leaders and outsiders, some types of wood are more preferable for the manufacture of exterior doors, and some should not be chosen.

If we consider the varieties growing on the territory of Russia, then among the deciduous leading positions are occupied by oak, ash and white acacia, and for use as an entrance door, ash is even preferable to oak in some respects.

“Middle peasants” in this list can be called maple, linden, nut, alder. The use of beech for entrance doors is extremely undesirable, since it is one of the most unstable wood species. Cherry is also undesirable for use as external doors, as it has low resistance to climate change.

Among coniferous species, the first place is shared by larch and cedar, and, if we talk about larch, then a prerequisite for the high strength of its wood is growing in a harsh Siberian climate. Larch logged in central Russia is much less valued.

A pine with medium soft wood is also used for the manufacture of exterior doors, but with significant reservations regarding operating conditions. An array of spruce wood is not used for street doors.

Glued furniture beam

Another material from which reliable wooden entrance doors are made is glued beams. When they talk about such a beam, they mean a monolith, obtained from individual fused boards (lamellas), assembled into a package and pressed. Such material is also called furniture timber. In Russia, its production is carried out from pine and spruce wood, less often from cedar or larch.

Thanks to this technology, it became possible to use some particularly capricious types of wood, such as linden, in the manufacture of doors. In the form of a “clean” massif, this type of wood is hardly found in view of the structural features of the trunk and a large abundance of knots.

It is customary to classify furniture beams as a variety of massif, as it is assembled from rather large fragments of the board, although its grade is lower due to the presence of glue.

LVL beam

This type of timber cannot be considered an array of wood, however, it has good user characteristics and may well serve as a material for the manufacture of entrance doors. The peculiarity of the structure of the LVL-timber consists in gluing numerous thin layers of veneer into a single monolith: a beam or a plate. The raw material for the production of such timber is most often coniferous wood. This is pine and spruce, which, thanks to such a constructive technique, improve their working qualities, turning into sufficiently hard and durable wood, which can be used in humid and aggressive environments, for example, for street doors.

This material is currently produced at only two factories in Russia, so little is known to the domestic buyer. On the cut, such a bar resembles a layer cake, therefore, it requires mandatory coating. In order to give the doors of the LVL-timber an attractive appearance, they are pasted over with veneer of expensive types of wood, such as oak, walnut or ash.

It is possible to install such veneered doors both as interior doors and as an entrance to a private house, however, it is undesirable to expose them to the open impact of natural precipitation.

This material is pressed wood dust, shavings and lignin, which glues this mixture. Since lignin is also obtained from wood waste, there is reason to say that MDF is an environmentally friendly material. The surface can be veneered, painted or treated with PVC film.

It is not recommended to use it as a frame for entrance doors, since the layered structure of the material will quickly collapse under stress. However, this material can be used in combination with a structure made of LVL-timber, glued timber-solid, or as overlays on the surface of a door made of solid wood, the appearance of which does not suit for any reason.

Selection tips

When purchasing a wooden entrance door for a private house, it is first of all worth focusing on the fact in which climatic conditions it will be operated.

In the case when it comes to the temperate climate of the central strip of Russia, where winter frosts below -30 ° are a rarity, do not be puzzled by the search for an insulated sandwich door. You can simply purchase a quality door made of solid wood or glued beams with a board thickness of 40 mm, which has a built-in cord insulation along the contour.

It is worth knowing that cedar wood has the lowest thermal conductivity, followed by larch, linden, pine, ash, maple and oak. A door made of cedar is the best barrier both from frost and from sunlight.

In addition, it is worth considering such a moment as the sensitivity of different types of wood to moisture. Least sensitive cedar, larch, ash and acacia, pine has a tendency to mold, and therefore requires particularly thorough drying and processing at the production stage. Oak is also susceptible to moisture.

For those regions where winters are accompanied by severe frosts, it is advisable to purchase a warmed design. Sandwich doors are presented in stores in a sufficient assortment, but, if desired, they can be made to order.

Such a door has a special structure, thanks to which it is ideal as an entrance door. The outer surface is made of solid wood, often with panels or patterns, depending on the imagination of the master and the wishes of the customer. The size of such a board can be from 40 mm to 50 mm in reinforced versions. Inside this design there is a cavity for insulation, which is covered with another canvas from the board (for some manufacturers, the inner side is made of MDF, which reduces the cost).

As a heater can be used:

  • Minvata, which is not an ideal filler, as it tends to caking and crumbling, eventually forming unprotected areas, the so-called “cold bridges”,
  • Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), which also has a number of disadvantages: in cold winters, condensate accumulates in it, which leads to freezing and mold, which ultimately leads to destruction of the filler,
  • Polyurethane, which is the highest quality insulation, since foamed polyurethane fills all voids and has a service life of 50 years.

Also, for areas with a harsh climate, it is recommended to install vestibule door structures, one door of which is insulated, and the second is thinner and has decorative significance.

Between such doors there is always a layer of warm air, which provides maximum protection from the cold.

Examples and options

Approaching the entrance to the country house, the visitor can already imagine the internal premises by the appearance of the front door. And if it is elegant and made of high-quality natural wood, it is easy to assume that the owner is a practical, reasonable person and not without taste.

A beautiful door in a rustic style, made of solid wood with preserving the natural color of the tree, can give charm even to a modest brick-built house. Ornaments in the form of forged flowers and an intricate overlay with a ring look appropriate and give the impression that the guest was in front of the door to the old tavern. This impression is supported by a coarse mat mat and forged torch holders on the sides of the door frame. From the whole design it blows solidity, reliability and elegant simplicity, since the design is not overloaded with decorative elements.

A semicircular entrance door to a country house made of solid wenge wood looks very worthy. The powerful door leaf has the usual rectangular shapes and is decorated with six carved panels. A design feature is the presence at the top of the arched transom, designed in the form of a ventilation grill, due to the presence of which a modest door structure takes on additional height and sophisticated shapes. An indescribable charm is brought into this interior by a designer mirror located on the wall adjacent to the front door. It is also decorated in the form of an arch, decorated with elements of decoration along the butt seams and just magically looks on the brick wall.

For windy and frosty winters, the best choice is a blank sandwich door.

Such doors do not usually sparkle with their external design, but they impress with reliable protection from the cold.

Wooden doors

In order to increase the resistance of the array to external factors, the surface of the product is covered with paints and varnishes, thereby prolonging the life of the material. A wooden canvas is not so much affected by precipitation, it absorbs moisture less intensively. According to these characteristics, the entrance door from the array is not far behind analogs from other materials.

The dimensions of the wooden structure are no different from the dimensions of a metal product. In the first case, leave a gap between the box and the canvas, which will compensate for the expansion of the material with increasing humidity. Wooden structures are often installed in the cottage or in the apartment, taking into account interior design. Products from this material are mounted as the main or auxiliary cloth. The second option is implemented when it is planned to put two doors. Moreover, one should be made of metal.

The entrance wooden door to the apartment consists of the elements:

  • the canvas that will cover the opening,
  • locking mechanism
  • a pen,
  • threshold,
  • the narthex
  • platbands,
  • door frame.

It is recommended to install a wooden cloth on objects where strict requirements to reliability and durability are not imposed. Mandatory elements - gaskets and insulation. It is necessary to perform the external finish of the wooden door leaf, which will additionally contribute to increasing the resistance of the array to external factors.

By design, they distinguish:

The first option can be seen when arranging private housing. It is not suitable for apartments. In multi-storey buildings, a single-leaf entrance wooden structure is almost always used. Such a model is more convenient in operation if there are restrictions on the area for opening and closing. Doors for a private house or apartment are presented in several options:

There is a difference in the breed used in the production of timber. To implement the best ideas, they select a material that is less susceptible to moisture, is durable, wear-resistant.

Advantages and disadvantages

If we consider wood, then in terms of strength this material is inferior to metal, however, in some other parameters, products of this type win. Advantages of wooden entrance doors:

  1. Attractive appearance
  2. environmental friendliness
  3. non-exposure to moisture (provided that the canvas has been processed),
  4. high sound and heat insulation indicators, for the most part these qualities contribute to the popularity of wooden products,
  5. long period of operation,
  6. comparative ease of processing.

If you choose the right kind of wood, you can count on the increased strength and moisture resistance of the material itself without additional impregnation. In the case when wooden entrance doors to a private house or apartment are selected, the disadvantages should also be considered:

  • the need for careful processing,
  • after several years of operation, restoration work is required: for this, the old coating is removed, and another layer of paints and varnishes is applied on top,
  • the tree is subject to mechanical stress, in particular, the surface can be damaged by sharp objects, if you press hard.

What types of wood can be produced?

Choosing the front door, you must first pay attention to the variety of material used. The characteristics of the product, as well as its service life, will depend on this. Species of trees used for this purpose:

  1. Ash. This is a common material, is durable and can compete with oak. Entrance doors made of wood of this breed are resistant to moisture, withstand mechanical stress. Material made of ash differs in a variety of shades, starting with pink and ending with light brown.
  2. Beech. This is another species of wood that is characterized by durability. Solid beech door is less resistant to moisture. It can lead if you do not perform processing.
  3. Ebony. This is the name of the species of trees of the genus Persimmon. In terms of strength, the material is superior to oak. Ebony is able to withstand several times more intense loads. However, it is more difficult to process, dry, which affects the cost. For comparison, ebony is more expensive than red.
  4. Spruce. This material is soft, resinous. Compared with analogs, wooden structures made of spruce are less susceptible to fungus and rot. The color of the door leaf will be light, almost white.
  5. Red tree. This group includes breeds: meranti, nyato. The cost of the material is much higher than that of analogues. This is due to increased strength characteristics and attractive appearance.
  6. Pine. Do not put such doors in any home. So, it is not recommended to use this material to fill openings of private housing. This is due to the fact that under the influence of direct sunlight the pine loses its properties.
  7. Oak. If you make a mistake when processing the material, the finished wooden product will swell.
