Doors

Hidden doors for interior painting: the main differences, installation features

During the repair, often there is a desire to change some parts, but there is no way to do this. Sometimes, the owners of the room only plan to upgrade, but have not yet decided what style the new interior will have. In this case, installing an interior door for painting will be the right decision. An unpainted door leaf will separate the space of the room, and you can take your time with the decision.

Constructions

New unpainted doors have differences in design type:

  1. Single, double. Double structures are best installed in spacious rooms, living rooms. In a small apartment, a wide construction will occupy usable space.
  2. Opening method: right-handed, left-handed. The choice depends on the preferences of the owners of the premises, habits, type of old design.
  3. Panel, panel models. Paneled doors have an original look and support a classic interior. Panel models can be performed without finishing - this will facilitate the process of painting them. Such models can easily fit into a modern interior.
  4. Hidden constructions. Mounted in an aluminum box. They should be painted after installation in one tone with the walls. Can be finished under a cupboard or wallpaper. Such canvases are installed in order to carefully hide from outsiders the presence of a passage to neighboring rooms.

Materials of manufacture

An important criterion when choosing a door leaf is the material of manufacture. The method of painting, the choice of paint and the result that you want to achieve will depend on this.

Door leafs can be made of the following materials:

  • an array of natural deciduous or coniferous wood,
  • veneered mixed models with a canvas of MDF, particleboard, fiberboard with a base of solid pine,
  • PVC models.

Paints made from expensive tree species (ash, oak) are better painted. Due to the dense structure without obvious gaps, defects, knots, the paint lays better. Such doors do not require special preparation for painting. Solid canvases are varnished to preserve an individual wooden structure. Such models of a high price category, but at the same time they are environmentally friendly, have good indicators of heat and sound insulation.

Veneered models are also well suited for painting - they are in great demand because of their low price, high wear resistance, interesting appearance. They are as environmentally friendly as solid wood structures, but less heavy. Cloths made of MDF have overlays of various shapes, fit well into the design of any room, suitable for painting.

On a note! To paint a cloth from plastic (PVC) is much simpler than from wood. Such designs are durable, not afraid of moisture, not susceptible to fungus.

Preserving the structure of the tree

In order to preserve the structure of the tree when staining, such coloring compositions as stain, wax coating, translucent paints, various impregnations are chosen. This method of coating will return the color of the old wooden surface, give a new look only to the acquired door without defects and primer.

Before painting, the surface is treated with sanding paper, then primed with wax or silicone. Staining takes place in several stages. You can apply up to three layers of stain or other coloring composition - it depends on the final color. To fix a persistent color, apply three layers of varnish.

Texture paint

Texture (textured) paint is used when it is not necessary to preserve the structure of the tree. It can be used on new and old, previously painted surfaces. In the second case, the old painted layer is removed from the door leaf beforehand.

Staining with textured paint occurs in 1-2 layers, the texture is created with a sponge or spatula. After a day, tinting is applied to create a pattern. The top layer, after drying, is removed with a grinder. This method is suitable for finishing hidden door leafs, as it will help to repeat the structure of painted walls.

Features of doors for painting

The main advantage of unpainted doors is that the owner himself chooses what and what color to paint them. And then it all depends on the imagination and professionalism of the master. Many people purchase solid wood doors for painting to make them "invisible." This effect is achieved due to the fact that a decorative coating is applied to the canvas to the tone used for wall decoration. Therefore, such products are also called hidden.

The price of doors for painting, as a rule, is lower in comparison with painted models. Usually these are single-leaf products with a continuous canvas.

If necessary, our measurer will be able to come to your home or office. This format of communication is the most productive, because by virtue of our experience our employee will be able to advise one or another version of the door structure on the spot, talk about the design and operation features of each of them. After the choice is made and the order is placed, we will promptly complete the manufacture and installation of invisible doors.

Enamel

Enamels for painting doors have a large palette of shades. It will be easy to choose the right color. Acrylic enamels create a not very resistant coating, so it is better to apply a layer of acrylic varnish on top of them. Alkyd enamels, on the contrary, are resistant, but with their use a very strong smell of solvents will not allow to stay in the room for about a day. This type of coating is not very expensive and will please a wide variety of shades.

More often, on sale you can find primed interior doors, ready for painting. Such canvases are easier to paint with colored or transparent varnish. It is applied in several layers, having previously cleaned the surface of dust. Old painted surfaces can be varnished, but it will take time to prepare them - removing dry paint, smoothing the surface with sandpaper, repairing cracks.

How to prepare the door surface?

A new unpainted door does not need additional preparation for applying paint, but you will have to work with the old ones. For good adhesion of the coloring composition to the surface, it should be pre-treated and degreased.

Important! Before starting work, the door leaf is removed from the hinges and the old paint layer is removed.

The surface is treated with sandpaper to identify all defects. If it has cracks, chips, they are sealed with putty. Before applying paint, varnish or enamel with adhesive tape, glue all surfaces that should not be painted (glass, lock). Preparing a door from PVC for painting consists in removing dust and contaminants from it.

How to choose a paint?

When choosing a coloring composition for coating the door leaf, several recommendations are followed:

  • choose paint for indoor use,
  • to the kitchen, bathroom - coating with moisture resistant properties,
  • choose a safe composition and read the recommendations of manufacturers on the use of a particular product.

More often interior doors are painted with enamel (alkyd or acrylic), varnishes, water-dispersion or nitro paints. When using nitro-paint, harmful fumes with an unpleasant odor of reagents are released. It is not recommended to stay in rooms with surfaces painted with such paint for up to two days.

To preserve the woody structure, choose oils or waxes with natural shades that repeat the color of real wood. You can choose one of many shades:

  • natural (walnut, pine, cherry, ash, birch, oak),
  • dark natural (dark walnut, dark cherry),
  • clarified natural (for example, light cherry),
  • tinted shades (red walnut, four shades of rustic oak).

Oils and waxes also have a natural palette of shades of different tree species - oak, wenge, maple, cherry, mahogany, birch, as well as colorless, white, beech and graphite.

Enamel for coating interior doors has a diverse palette of shades (includes several thousand). The most popular are white, black, green, blue, brown, red and their shades.

How to paint?

The painting process depends on the type of door and the material from which it is made. Soft woods absorb paint well, so they are painted in several layers. Pine releases resin - it must be treated with special compounds.

For staining, apply:

  • spray gun - suitable for updating any surface made of wood, MDF or PVC, mask all hidden defects,
  • roller - you can completely paint the shield model,
  • roller and brush - are jointly used for painting paneled doors, all indentations are filled with a brush, and the remaining surface of the canvas is painted with a roller.

The best results together with less labor costs gives the use of a spray gun. If it is not possible to purchase or borrow such a tool, you can achieve the desired result using a roller. Before applying each next coat of paint, regardless of the method, wait for the complete drying of the previous one.

How to remove old paint?

  • chemical - the use of special compounds (washes),
  • mechanical - removal of the dry layer using tools,
  • thermal - heating of paint with special tools (a building hair dryer, a heat gun, an iron).

Door painting is a solution for those who want to realize design ideas. The above method of updating the interior is suitable for lovers of original inexpensive options for decorating your home.

Types of Hidden Doors

Each manufacturer slightly changes the structural elements of the doors, this applies to the profile, awnings and external fittings. But the main features remain unchanged. On what grounds are doors classified?

Table. The main design differences

Door design featureShort description
The door leaf can open outside and inside the room, be left or right. The vast majority of manufacturers complete their products with universal hinges and accessories. The decision on the type of opening is made by the customer and the master, taking into account the style of interior design of the room.

The store sells a clean door tightly, as a rule, the external surfaces are made of fiberboard up to 5 mm thick. But there are options for using better and more expensive materials. On the spot, a decision is made on the method of decorating the doors; they can be painted or wallpapered.

Finishing of door frames is done by the manufacturer. Because of this, it ceases to be hidden in appearance, only purely engineering features remain. In this case, the door plays an important decorative role in the design of the style of the room.

Each consumer should independently determine the choice of a particular model. If there is not enough experience, it is better to consult with professional designers.

Advantages and disadvantages of designs

It is recommended that you obtain this information from experienced builders, not manufacturers. The former give an objective assessment based on many years of practice, the latter try to maximize the number of sales, and advertising is considered the most important way to achieve their goals.

The disadvantages of hidden doors

Let's start with them, we will indicate only the most important ones.

  1. High price. The scatter is significant depending on the models and manufacturers, but on average such designs are about two times more expensive than traditional doors.
  2. The complexity of installation work. Installation of doors requires technical knowledge and special tools. Not every user has the opportunity to mount hidden doors on their own, you have to turn to professionals for help. Their services are not cheap, which further increases the overall estimated cost of the structure.
  3. Doors look great on one side only. From the inside of the room they look quite ordinary, and if the installation was done by inexperienced craftsmen, various defects will be clearly visible.
  4. The installation of the door depends on the type of flooring. In some cases, it can only be installed prior to finishing the floor.
  5. Difficulties in replacing an ordinary door with a hidden one. It is necessary to carry out repair work on the walls, after dismantling the platbands, traces of the old design are noticeable.

As can be seen from the list, actual shortcomings make you think carefully and analyze, and only then make a final decision.

Benefits of hidden paint doors

Almost all the advantages relate to design issues, this is a feature of hidden doors.

The door almost merges with the wall, the room takes on an original appearance. True, not all users like this.

If you have made the final decision on installing hidden doors, we recommend that you carefully read the instructions before starting work. It not only provides a detailed description of each technological operation, but also practical advice from experienced craftsmen.

Step-by-step installation instructions for hidden doors

A feature of the doors is a special box for flush mounting. It is a complex bar consisting of a metal profile and a base. The metal profile is made of aluminum-based alloy, has a small vestibule with a glued rubber strip seal. On the one side of the profile there is a groove that allows you to install finishing materials for the interior partition, and on the other hand, a smaller recess is provided. The work consists of several stages, each must be done very carefully. One of the differences in the installation of hidden doors is the dimensional accuracy of all parts up to a millimeter. If the ordinary technology allows to level errors of linear parameters up to 8–5 mm, then there is no such possibility.

Box preparation

Step 1. Saw off the ends of the upper crossbar of the box at an angle of 45 °. For this operation, you must have a special machine, the manual method using the miter box does not allow you to obtain the necessary accuracy. We already mentioned that it is very difficult, and in some cases almost impossible to correct the mistakes made on the metal profile.

Saw off one end at an angle of 45 °, cut off a minimum piece of profile.

We have given specific dimensions; yours may be different depending on the design features.

Step 2. Prepare the left and right door frame pillars. Hinges are placed on one side and a door latch on the other. The work is also done in several stages. First prepare the rack with the door latch.

Measure the distance from the top to the middle of the latch on the canvas, in our case it is 130 cm. To this value you need to add a gap between the box and the canvas of 3 mm, as a result, the distance is 130.3 cm.

Now you need to prepare the support with door hinges. The installed model already has holes on the canvas and profile, you need to carefully combine them and make marks on the profile. Do not rush, check the position several times. It is impossible to extend the metal profile, the marriage will always be noticeable. Control the accuracy of alignment of the holes on the technological window. It is intended for door hinges, but at this stage it is free and makes it possible to correctly take measurements.

Step 3. Mark the end of the door leaf on the profile, also add three millimeters to the gap. All dimensions are given clean without considering the location of the floor covering.

This parameter depends on the type of finish flooring, in our case we need to make a gap of one centimeter. This means that the total length of the side supports of the box should differ from the height of the canvas by 10 + 3 = 13 mm. Measure the height of the door and add this size to it. In our case, the length of the side elements of the box is 200 cm (blade height) + 3 mm (the gap between the doors and the upper crossbar) + 1 cm (clearance in the lower part of the structure) = 201.3 cm. The obtained parameters make it possible to precisely cut off the excess metal profile .

Practical advice. Always remember that any saw on the machine has its own cut width, it can reach two or more millimeters. In the case of installation of hidden doors, these are large values, the box must have high dimensional accuracy.

Prices for the popular range of face saws

In order not to have further problems, do not rush to immediately saw. Always set the workpiece so that the saw runs along the outside of the cut line. Observe this rule when preparing all parts, otherwise significant problems will arise during assembly of the structure.

Step 4. Lay out the box parts on a flat surface, clearly align the corners of the crossbar with the uprights.

Step 5. Drill holes for the hardware in the profile. In most cases, three fixation points are sufficient; the holes should not be through.

Step 6. Screw the screws into the holes until they stop, check and, if necessary, adjust the corners of the box.

Now you can proceed with its installation in the interior partition.

Door frame installation

Fixing in the doorway is done using special metal mounting plates, all additional elements, hardware and fittings are sold as a set. Carefully deal with the fixation technology, find out why each part is needed, what function it performs, how it is fixed and adjustable. You must understand not only the adjustment technology, but also the possible consequences of incorrect actions.

The door leaf is installed on special hinges, which, after closing, are hidden in a box. Hinges have three adjustments in planes, precisely expose the canvas in height, depth and vertical.

Step 1. Mark the location of the mounting plates; three pieces are installed on each vertical rack of the box. It is recommended to place two at a distance of 20 cm from the bottom and top, and a third in the middle between them. In our case, the plates are placed at a height of 20 cm, 115 cm and 210 cm.

Step 2. Screw the plates to the profiles, for this, durable self-tapping screws of the corresponding sizes are given in the kit.

Step 3. Make markings in the openings for adjusting dowels, their position corresponds to the placement of the plates. Remember to leave a clearance gap for the floor. From the plane of installation of the door leaf, the mounting bolts are displaced by 4 cm. This is in our example, the data changes depending on the parameters of the metal profile of the door frame.

Step 4. Drill holes and insert plastic dowel elements into them. If the connection is weak, then you must use any methods known to you to increase the reliability of the fixation. It is necessary to achieve a stable position of the bolts, they hold all the loads on the door, including sharp shock.

Step 5. Tighten the adjusting bolts, install them in an upright position. This is done at the laser or ordinary bubble level. In the second case, you need to have a long tool, it must simultaneously control three bolts. The distance between them is about two meters, the same length is necessary and the level.

Practical advice. Immediately estimate how far away the bolt heads should be from the doorway. To do this, measure the width of the opening and the width of the box on the outer planes. After elementary arithmetic calculations, you will find out the width of the slots between the doors and the wall.

Step 6. Align the middle adjustment bolt on the opposite side of the doorway. In our case, the value is equal to the width of the door frame along the outer perimeter plus 6 mm to the gap between the heads and holes of the mounting plates. Align the two remaining bolts with this bolt under the level.

Step 7. On the base of the floor, install a compensator, its thickness should correspond to the thickness of the floor covering. A box will stand on it during its fixation.

Step 8. Insert the door frame into the opening and proceed with its adjustment. This is done in this order.

First level out the part of the structure with which the door hinges are located. Work very carefully, this vertical support will be the standard, all other sizes are adjusted for it, including the gaps between the door leaf.

Now it remains to fix the door handles. At the last stage, you need to close the cracks between the box and the wall, the surfaces must be made perfectly smooth. The door is ready for finishing. The outer surface of the canvas is painted with the same compositions as the walls, so it is hidden from view as much as possible.

What paint doors are made of

All types of interior products are suitable for painting. Blocks are made from natural solid wood, wood-fiber boards, wood-shaving compositions, etc. It is possible to stain doors made of plastic and metal.

Wooden doors for painting are made from varieties of natural wood (beech, walnut, oak, ash). Beech structures are high-quality, wear-resistant. The oak structure is durable and holds paint well. Often the surface of the oak is emphasized with varnish and stain.

Walnut wood has a moire texture and noble tone. Solid pine doors have a reddish hue, the raw materials contain resins, so they are degreased before painting. Solid ash wood, slightly porous, is the best option for painting.

For painting, doors are used that combine a wood frame and a particleboard, MDF.

Veneered models can be panel or panel. Panel products are optimal for a classic interior. Panel constructions are used for hidden interior doors. Built-in elements are painted in tone with the wall.

Features of painting different materials

In the process of decorating doors, it is necessary to take into account the requirements for processing different types of raw materials.

Massive blocks are heavy, with smooth or textured surfaces. Wood is painted with transparent or translucent coatings. Outdated doors for painting are treated with wood glaze with a dense structure.

Painting MDF and chipboard is more difficult than processing the array, because The following steps are required: degreasing and cleaning. Water-based acrylic paints for wood are suitable for work. Materials are applied in 2-3 layers. The consumption of raw materials will reduce the primer, hiding irregularities and defects.

Paneled blocks require several stages of staining, as combined products. The frame is disassembled into elements, the joints are carefully processed with paints and varnishes. The panel paintings are painted in small squares.

If necessary, plastic and metal structures are painted. For a persistent tone, alkyd, hammer or spray paints are recommended in spray cans.

The better to paint

As a coloring material for doors, opaque and transparent coatings are used. Dense tinting compositions are alkyd and oil paints, as well as nitro-paint. Transparent application is provided by varnishes.

Alkyd enamels are a common material for painting doors. Raw materials are represented by a rich palette of shades. Alkyd enamel has an acceptable cost, so it is often purchased for decorating unpainted interior doors. The coating is resistant to external influences. But because of the pungent odor, enamels are not recommended for children's rooms.

Wooden paintings can be painted with acrylic enamels. Water-based paints are universal, suitable for indoor use. Acrylic enamels are easy to apply and have a smooth surface. Paint perfectly hides defects. From mechanical influences, the coating is protected by a layer of varnish.

Nitro-paint is aesthetic, durable, represented by a wide palette of shades and is optimal for different wood textures. The coating is dense and durable. However, when applying evaporation, nitro-paints can adversely affect human health. Therefore, work is carried out outdoors or in a ventilated area. The material is of high price.

Models from the array are also processed with varnish (transparent or tinted). The choice of option depends on the design decision. Transparent coating will preserve the structure and natural shade of wood. Toning with compounds is necessary to give a contrasting color.

Surface preparation and paintwork

Before paintwork, it is important to prepare interior doors and choose a color for the finish. Features of the process include dismantling the frame, removing the door from the hinges, installing the canvas on the supports. It is necessary to remove the fasteners and handles. Fixed parts (lock, hinges) are covered with tape. Work is carried out in a ventilated room or in the open air.

Then the old paint and primer are removed. Work is carried out using a building hair dryer, putty knife, and washes. After complete removal of paint, the door is cleaned of dust and degreased. Defects must be puttied. Re-sanded the primed door for painting.

The painting scheme of the web depends on the type of product design. Application of paint to the array is possible in one or several layers, depending on the design project.

If the product is a panel board, a roller and a brush are used during the painting process. The brush is used for small parts and painting gaps. We apply paint on a large surface with a roller. Staining is done from the upper corner and from left to right in the direction of the wood fibers.

In the panel product, first with the brush, the depressions of the structure are painted over. After that, the old canvas is painted with a roller. If blocks with a hidden box are decorated, a primer and decoration of not only the canvas, but also the wall panels will be required.
